Being a Jpop fan since high school, I was really excited to hear earlier this year that Kyary Pamyu Pamyu would be coming to Australia as part of her 5th year anniversary world tour. After 4 months of waiting, I finally got to see her live yesterday in Big Top concert hall in Luna Park theme Park in Sydney. This was actually my first time going to proper live concert too, so I was even more excited. And I was not disappointed.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a Japanese fashion model and singer/performer who has become a household name in Japan and an international JPop icon since her hit song "PONPONPON" in 2011, which currently has 96,600,000 + views on Youtube. Apart from her vibrant, super kawaii Harajuku fashion style and adorable dance moves and cute voice, Kyary music is also produced by Japanese electronic hitmaker Nakata Yasutaka (who also writes the music for J-electro group Perfume)! Being a fan of Perfume, I was very excited to see what Kyary's concert would be like in Australia.

When I got to Luna Park at around 6.40pm, there were already at least 100-200 people lining up to get in. It was freezing waiting by outer rim of the park which was right next to the waters of Sydney Harbour. Eventually, by around 7.30pm, we managed to get into the concert.
Although the concert was meant to start at 7pm, it was 8pm before there was any action on stage.
And of course, Kyary made an energetic entrance with the first song on her newly released best album, "KPP on Stage. Along with Kyary were four dancers and a DJ Plant dressed up in a tree costume (the theme was flower!).

First on the list was her hit single PONPONPON, followed by some of her other well known singles.
She also performed a cover of Do do pi do, originally released by her producer's own group CAPSULE.
Halfway through the night was a 5-minute intersession, with some pretty funky electro music in the background and a looping video of Kyary's face on the big screen. That was pretty much the only break Kyary had. The other 120-or-so minutes was full of Kyary's dancing, singing and the occassional MCing.

Thoughts & feelings:
KYARY IS ADORABLE - no wonder she is a kawaii ambassador for Harajuku
Kyary has a very high pitched voice when speaking, which is similar to her singing voice. She can actually reach quite high notes. She sang a few lines of SAI & CO acapella when telling the crowd how to do the hand gestures.
I was surprised that I could still see Kyary despite being towards the mid/end of the hall (my phone did have a bit of difficulty zooming in). I would probably have had to pay twice as much to see Kyary in Japan in the same proximity as I did yesterday.
There was no unreasonable pushing or shoving. Everything seemed to have ran smoothly. I am impressed, especially compared to last year Itano Tomomi's cruise performance, which was a hot mess.
Overall, I enjoyed the show very much minus the 1 hour delay. Although the show felt a bit short (finished before 10pm), Kyary performed many of her hit singles flawlessly, and definitely engaged the crowd with her energetic performance. I heard that this year's concert was a lot better than Kyary's concert 2 years ago.
Australia does not have as big of a J-pop fan base compared to some of our Asian neighbours, so it is a rare opportunity to have Kyary herre in Sydney. It is great to see that Japanese artists are beginning to include Australia as part of their tours. I hope that in the coming years we will be seeing some big names in Jpop coming down under, such as Perfume!
